Pizza Night, Card Games, and a 13th Birthday: An At Home Family Session in Houston, TX

If you have ever looked at family photos on Instagram and thought "we would never make it to a field at golden hour without someone crying," this session is for you.

This mom booked an at home petite session with her two kids and did not change a single thing about their normal Friday. Pizza on the table. A card game on the living room floor. Ice cream straight from the pint on the couch. Her daughter turning thirteen with one cupcake and two candles. That was the whole plan, and it made some of my favorite images of the year.

Here is how it went, and why an in home session is usually the least stressful option for Houston families. The best part is the kids were really excited that they were getting pizza and ice cream at 9:30am!

What a petite session at home actually looks like

A petite session is a shorter, focused session in your own house. No location scouting, no drive across town, no coordinating five outfits around a sunset that will not wait for you.

We pick one or two things your family already does together and I photograph those. That is it. For this family it was pizza night and a birthday. For yours it might be Saturday pancakes, the bedtime book pile, or the way everyone ends up in the kitchen at the same time no matter how big the house is.

The reason it works is simple. Kids behave like themselves at home. They climb on the back of the couch. They lay upside down with a game controller. They eat the frosting first. When I am not asking a five year old to stand still on a bridge, I get real expressions instead of the squinty forced smile every mom recognizes.

Pizza night, no styling required

We started at the dining table with a pizza box open and a slice getting passed across the table. Her son cheesed the entire time. When they "cheers" the pizza it was the kind of photo you cannot pose your way into.

A note for anyone worried about mess: I do not need your house staged. The pizza box stays in the frame. The paper towel holder on the counter stays. Those details are what make the photo priceless ten years from now. If there is a specific corner you do not want photographed, tell me at the start and I will simply shoot around it.

The card game on the floor

After pizza the kids pulled out a card game and sat cross legged on the living room floor while mom watched from the couch with a glass of wine. This is where the session opened up.

Somebody lost. Cards went flying. I got a frame of her son with both arms overhead and two cards suspended in midair while his big sister laughed at him from the floor. It's the kind of moment mom's usually wish they had in pictures but rarely get.

That is the whole argument for documentary style family photography. The best moments are not on the shot list but they are in the album now.

Ice cream on the couch - Why not?!

Then all three of them ended up on the sectional passing a pint around, which I am told is not usually allowed. I shot it low and close, with her son's bare feet hanging off the cushion in sharp focus and the three of them soft in the background.

Honestly, this scene ended up being my favorite because it felt most like home and made images that are truly frame worthy.

A quiet 13th birthday at home

For this family’s at home session, the celebration was simple and sweet—a single cupcake with number candles in the kitchen for their daughter’s thirteenth birthday. She held it carefully in both hands, then leaned in to blow out the candles while her mom reached in for a little frosting. It was such a genuine little moment, and exactly the kind of memory that feels even more meaningful when photographed at home.

Thirteen is such a beautiful age to document. There’s a little more confidence, a little more awareness, and still plenty of sweetness in the in-between. I also took a few quieter portraits of her on the couch by the window, arms folded and looking out. Those thoughtful, tucked-away frames are often the ones families treasure most as the years go by.

Why in home sessions are the least stressful option in Houston

Houston weather does not care about your session date. Between the heat, the humidity that ruins curls in about nine minutes, and the storm that rolls in at 5pm, outdoor sessions carry real risk of a reschedule.

At home sessions solve most of that:

  • No drive time. No wrangling everyone into the car after work.
  • No weather rescheduling. We shoot regardless of what is happening outside.
  • Naps and snacks stay on schedule. Little kids are photographed at their best hour, not at 7:30pm.
  • Kids are comfortable. Their toys, their couch, their safe places
  • Everything you need is right there. A forgotten shoe is a ten second problem instead of a session ending one.

If your home genuinely does not have the light or the space you want, that is a fair concern. In that case we can shoot a hybrid, starting at home for the real life frames and finishing outside in your neighborhood or backyard for the classic all together portrait.

How to prep for an at home session in five steps

  1. Clear the surfaces in one or two rooms. Not the whole house. Counters and the coffee table make the biggest difference.
  2. Open every blind and curtain, and turn off overhead lights. Window light is what I am working with, and mixing it with yellow ceiling bulbs makes skin tones untrue.
  3. Pick the activity, not the outfit, first. What does your family actually do together on a normal night? Start there.
  4. Dress in soft solids and neutrals. This family wore cream, sage, and denim, which is why the images feel calm instead of busy. Skip large logos and tight patterns.
  5. Feed everyone beforehand. Unless the food is the activity, in which case we are already ahead.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a petite session? Petite sessions run about 30 minutes which is usually the sweet spot before younger kids are finished with the whole idea. I can always stay longer if your family prefers it slow and relaxed.

Does my house need to be clean? It needs about two tidy rooms. I compose tight when I need to and I know how to work around a laundry pile.

What if my house is small or dark? Small houses photograph beautifully because everyone is close together. For low light, we schedule mid morning or early afternoon when window light is strongest, and I shoot near the largest windows in the house.

Can we include a birthday, a new baby, or a holiday? Yes, and I recommend it. Anchoring a session to a real occasion gives the images a reason to exist beyond "we needed updated photos."

What areas do you serve? I am based in Spring, TX and photograph families throughout the greater Houston area, including The Woodlands, Tomball, Cypress, Magnolia, and the surrounding communities.

When should I book? Fall dates fill first. If you want an at home session tied to a specific date such as a birthday or a homecoming, reach out four to six weeks ahead.
